Can a straight person fall in love with someone of the same out of desperation?

(This isn't me, but my mom thinks that's what happened with me, and i'm just wondering if that's even possible)... If you're straight and desperate enough, can you find someone you have a strong emotional connection with and fall in love with them and then be able to be attracted to them because you love their personality? Or does that make you bi/gay if you are able to fall in love with someone of the same (even if it's just cuz you can't find someone of the opposite )?
