Do you have to have multifunction tester calibrated?

i have a fluke multi tester. i have a calibration check box and read to within the 2% tolerence thats on the card. iwas talking to a kitchen fitter the other day and he said you didnt have to have it calibrated every year. as long as you checked it regularly and record the readings is this true.? as mine is up for a calibration and could really do with saving the money as yet
